How to reduce the weight of a PDF

This tool does not rewrite text or delete internal objects: render each page as a JPG image with the chosen quality and resolution and build a PDF new with those images. It is the most effective method in the browser for scanned documents, presentations with many photos or PDF exported from mobile.

  1. Add the PDF with the selector or by dragging it to the upload area.
  2. Adjust the quality (40–95%) and resolution (1×, 1.5× or 2×).
  3. Press «Compress PDF» and wait for local processing to finish.
  4. Compare the size and download the result if it works for you.

When it works well and when it doesn't

It works especially well with scans, captures, and documents with large images. In Instead, a PDF that was already compressed or that only contains vector text can weigh the same or even more, because each page is replaced by an image. If that happens, the quality drops to 40–60% or resolution at 1×; If it still does not improve, the document does not benefit from this method.

The limit is 80 pages per operation and 25 MB of input. For longer documents, split the PDF first and compress each part.

What is preserved and what is lost

The visual appearance of each page and the original page size are preserved. They lose the selectable text, links, interactive forms, bookmarks, layers, and metadata. OCR is also not applied: a scan is still an image. Check the result before send it if the document is important.

Privacy

The file is not uploaded to FasTools or third parties. Reading, rendering, JPG encoding and PDF reconstruction occur within your browser with libraries served from it site. Closing or reloading the page releases the data in memory.

Frequently asked questions

Can compressed PDF be edited again?

Yes, but its content will be one image per page. You will not be able to select or search for the text original, and an editor will treat it as a scanned image.

Why does the compressed file weigh more?

Because the original PDF was already optimized or had very little visual content. Rasterize Add one image per page. In those cases there is no real gain: keep the original.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The entire process is local in your browser. The page does not send the file over the network.
